Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or defense positions.
"As we did, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified announcement censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no place in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with tremendous loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these unhinged digital publications and recant his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Answer
The officials who participated in the video also released a response.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this nation and made an vow to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
More Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of Congress instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative stated. "You have active officials of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
