India's capital Rises to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" category.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital showed an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold established by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x exceeding acceptable levels.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Policy Shifts

For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that engulfs the city as winter begins.

However earlier this year, the newly elected local government approached the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Court Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during specific periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a major issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in nearby states of farming communities.

In these regions, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million people residing in the capital region is significant, according to multiple research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities each year in the capital.
