Travel Shares Slump amid Political Rift with Beijing

In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is facing an growing political tension with China concerning Taiwan.

Shares in Japan's tourism and retail firms have dropped sharply after China advised its residents to avoid traveling to Japan.

This move by Chinese authorities heightened a diplomatic feud that was sparked by remarks from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of deploying troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.

The development triggered a wave of selling across Japanese tourism-related shares.

  • Oriental Land stock dropped by 5.7%
  • The department store chain tumbled by 11.3%
  • The national carrier declined by 3.75%

"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning discouraging travel to Japan brings near-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.

"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services particularly at risk."

Economic Contraction Breakdown

Japanese GDP declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were hit by duties imposed by the US recently.

Exports were a primary driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Earlier this year, the US administration had proposed Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15% when the two countries reached a trade agreement.

Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8% in the quarter through September.

"Japan's economy was strong in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP figures showed that growth is halted for now.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate growth trend going forward."

The US administration has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, tomatoes, coffee and bananas amid increasing concerns about rising costs.
