Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
