A Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book a place to stay upon arrival, yet once I got there, a large conference was happening and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, thinking I could pass those hours somewhere operating all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the following day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people like that woman.
It seems I seemed lost since a female student saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she suggested I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: one stuffed baguettes she brought back her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a woman allowing a guy she’d just met stay in her room. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she did that – and remain very grateful.
I never did study at ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her good deed abundantly. The world needs more folks with such compassion.
