Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
