Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
