Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
